Kamień Pomorski Cathedral

Kamień Pomorski Cathedral

The parish in Kamień Pomorski was founded in the 12th century.

It is an outcome of the Christian mission initiated by Bolesław III Wrymouth and carried out by St. Otto of Bamberg in the Pomeranian Duchy of Duke Wartislaw. The construction of the cathedral began in 1176, and soon afterwards the local bishop moved there his seat from Wolin.

The Catholic parish existed there until 1534, and the cathedral was Catholic until 1544. After the last Catholic bishop died in Kamień Pomorski in 1544, the cathedral became a Lutheran church. This lasted until 1945. The Catholic Church returned to that land after the end of World War II.

The visitors are particularly attracted by the historic pipe organs and the beautiful courtyard with trees being natural monuments.
